About Pamukkale

Pamukkale, meaning “cotton castle” in Turkish, is a stunning natural site located in the southwestern region of Turkey. The site is famous for its white cascades of calcium springs, formed from the hot water of the 17 thermal springs in the area. As the hot spring water rises to the surface, it releases its carbon dioxide and deposits the calcium bicarbonate, creating the iconic white cascades of Pamukkale. This natural wonder is truly a sight to behold and has attracted visitors from all over the world.

However, Pamukkale is not just a geological marvel. It is also home to the ancient city of Hierapolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was built in the 2nd century BC by the King of Pergamon and later became a Roman city. Hierapolis was a bustling city, famous for its important sanctuaries and as a vital trade center. The city was particularly renowned for its purple dye and cloth-making, which were highly sought-after commodities in the ancient world.

In addition to its historical and cultural significance, Hierapolis is also believed to be the site of Saint Philip’s martyrdom. Although it is uncertain whether this refers to Philip the Apostle or Philip the Evangelist, the crypt believed to be the location of his remains is considered a sacred place and attracts many visitors.

As an ancient city with Pagan roots and Christian traditions, the remains of Hierapolis provide a fascinating glimpse into the rich history of the region. Visitors can explore the ancient ruins of the city, including the theater, the necropolis, and the magnificent Roman baths, which are still remarkably well-preserved. Moreover, the opportunity to relax in the hot waters of the ancient pool is a unique and relaxing experience, adding to the allure of this incredible site.

Overall, Pamukkale and Hierapolis offer a unique combination of natural beauty and historical significance, making it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in Turkey’s rich cultural heritage.
