Istanbul’s Byzantine and Ottoman Relics: A Journey Through Time in Istanbul
Explore the enchanting city of Istanbul, once known as Constantinople, and witness the legacies of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. This ancient metropolis showcases its glorious past through iconic monuments that have stand up the test of time.
Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya): Originally constructed as a Byzantine cathedral in the 6th century, Hagia Sophia evolved into an imperial mosque during the Ottoman era and turned into a museum. Now it is serving as a mosque. With its iconic dome, intricate mosaics, and magnificent architecture, it narrates the city’s rich historical heritage.
Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque): A stone’s throw from Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque exemplifies stunning Ottoman architecture. Adorned with six minarets and captivating blue tiles, it offers a serene ambiance and an invitation to explore its elegant design.
German Fountain (Alman Çeşmesi): Gracing Sultanahmet Square, the German Fountain is a gift symbolizing international cooperation. A blend of Ottoman and German styles, it stands as a testament to the diplomatic relations of the late 19th century.
Obelisk of Theodosius (Dikilitaş): Situated in the Hippodrome, this ancient Egyptian relic, placed in its current location in the 15th century BC, underlines the city’s prominence as the center of the Eastern Roman Empire.
Serpentine Column (Yılanlı Sütun): Another marvel in the Hippodrome, the Serpentine Column commemorates the victory at Plataea in 479 BC, echoing the city’s Roman and Byzantine history.
Hippodrome (At Meydanı): Once the heart of daily life in Byzantine Constantinople, the Hippodrome hosted chariot races, processions, games, and mock battles, offering a glimpse into the city’s vibrant past.
Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı): Constructed in the 15th century, the Grand Bazaar remains a bustling commercial center. Visitors can bargain for Turkish carpets, jewelry, spices, and pottery, experiencing the lively atmosphere of the Istanbul market.
Topkapi Palace (Topkapı Sarayı): Overlooking the Bosphorus for almost four centuries, the Topkapi Palace was the residence of Ottoman sultans. Its architecture, gardens, and courtyards reflect the grandeur of the Ottoman Empire. While the gardens, courtyards, and pavilion are open to the public, the Harem Section remains off-limits.
