There is only small amount of information about the Byzantine times and the town suffered during the Arab-Byzantine Wars and mostly abandoned. The city fortified in 8th century and by the 10th century city became Makri or Makre. The ancient name was forgotten. The city lived in a renewed prosperity in 12 and 13th centuries. The city walls enlarged and city recorded as a center of perfume production and trade. Early 13th century the city fell under the rules of Turks. In 1424 the city became a part of Ottoman Empire. There was a great number of Greek population in Fethiye who returned to Greece after the population exchange between Greece and Turkey. The city renamed after Fethi Bey who was one of the first pilot of Ottoman air force. Oludeniz, Kayakoy, Kabakli Bay, Gocek and Lycian tombs are the most important tourist attraction in this area.
